Gooooooooool!

Goooooooooool!

Every World Cup, Zeh Fernandes builds an experimental art project to celebrate the tournament.

In this year’s edition, data points about each game combine to create beautiful posters.

They’re calculated using code. The timing of the game creates a grid. Goals have gravity, which pull possession colors toward them, creating stunning visual effects.

See them all at gencup.art, or read how they’re made.

Build your dream team

I had a little World Cup fun, too:

Touching grass

Observant members of the Silly Software Club may have noticed that this issue is late. I try to write one every month, but in July, I just… didn’t. I’m sorry! I got a little burnt out after a bunch of travel, some sickness, etc.

I’ve said before that Silly Software is a great burnout cure, though, and I still believe it! Here are some solid burnout remedies.

Remedy 1: forced movement

Are you walking the dangerous tightrope between “staying current” and AI psychosis? Aren’t we all? Here’s your remedy. Botchet made a Claude Code plugin that blocks him from using Claude until he’s done push-ups or squats.

Remedy 2: an inescapable black hole

In case that’s not a strong enough incentive, this builder ripped through the time-space continuum and it created a black hole in their terminal. The longer you work, the bigger the black hole gets. At a certain point, it becomes impossible to continue working without taking a break.

Remedy 3: know thy stressor

Sometimes, awareness is half the battle. Find out which coworker raises your blood pressure most, and then consider devising an evil scheme to get them fired. This is not legal advice.

Remedy 4: hard manual labor

In case none of these work, you can always fight burnout the old-fashioned way: hard manual labor. Gavin built a wood chopping simuator by 3D-scanning the wood pile in his backyard and his own body motions as he chops. It’s beautiful and deeply satisfying.

Parting words

I’ll be speaking about “Whimsy-Driven Development” at Laracon at the end of July. See you there?
